Orangery Garden at Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Austria’s most visited tourist attraction. For centuries the palace served as the summer home of the Habsburgs, and to this day reflects the interests and tastes of the Habsburg monarchs. The ten main rooms of the Orangery vary in size and style, and are all joined by large, light-filled break areas. The seamless interaction of old building substance and modern adaption is what makes them so striking. The Orangery was not only a home for rare and exotic plants throughout the Baroque period; it also played an essential role in the culture of courtly festivities. The Orangery, built in the mid-eighteenth century, was the site of parties, banquets, and theatrical performances during Joseph II’s presidency. It was the setting for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri’s legendary musical duel; it was the ballroom where the Congress of Vienna danced. The plants in the Orangery, as well as the Orangery Garden, which was utilized as a pleasure and cooking garden, played a significant role in the staging of these celebrations.
